| We perform Modified Barium Swallow
studies (MBS) at the patient's residence (home, SNF) using a
DIA-SCAN video fluoroscopy system housed in a mobile van. The
DIA-SCAN videofluroscopy unit has been designed to better serve
the needs of patients and healthcare facilities. |

The oral, pharyngeal and upper esophageal stages of the swallow
are assessed. Lateral and anterior-posterior (A-P) radiographic
views are completed. The standard procedures of MBS studies are
utilized. Additional textures may be analyzed at the end of the
study if requested.
A specially trained diagnostic team including a physician with
fluoro-certification, and ASHA certified dysphagia specialty trained
Speech-Language pathologist and a technician travel with the mobile
van to ensure test accuracy and proper evaluation. Recommendations
for patient care planning and a video copy of the study are left
with the patient at the completion of the study. A full radiology
report is available within 24 hours.
Our completion of the MBS study helps to determine:
- A patient's safety for oral intake of food and hydration.
- The ideal diet and liquid consistency for a patient.
- The occurence of aspiration before, during, and after the swallow.
- Appropriate swallowing therapy, including use of compensatory
swallowing techniques.
- Anticipated benefits from swallowing therapy for a patient on
enteral feeding
- The medical necessity of enteral feeding.
The benefits of the mobile video-fluoroscopy service are many,
including the ability to set up the mobile unit at any location
in a manner most comfortable for the patients and availability of
immediate information about the patient's swallowing ability.
