speech and language evaluations and treatment

We provide complete evaluations for all aspects of speech and language delays and disorders including: Articulation, Apraxia, Language Delay, Stroke / CVA, Brain Injury, Dysfluency / Stuttering. Recommendations for frequency and duration of therapy are provided following the evaluation. In some cases such as a complex medical history or when seeking a second opinion assessment, the evaluation may be conducted over several sessions. Evaluations may include standardized testing procedures, informal language samples during play or conversation, observation, and caregiver / parent interview.

See Developmental Milestones for Children to determine if an evaluation is appropriate for your child.

tongue thrust and myofunctional therapy
Myofunctional therapy is often recommended for individuals who demonstrate a pattern of tongue thrust which is impairing either speech clarity or correction of an orthodontic issue. A tongue thrust is a forward push of the tongue upon swallowing due to muscle weakness. Over time, consistent pressure against teeth can result in dental misalignments. The purpose of Myofunctional therapy is to develop an appropriate swallowing habit that directs the tongue away from dentition. Our treatment program typically involves an initial evaluation and 12 therapy sessions with periodic follow up after therapy is completed.
voice therapy
Our office provides evaluation and treatment of all aspects of voice disorders such as vocal cord nodules, spasmodic dysphonia, polyps and muscle tension dysphonia as well as issues faced by professional voice users.
stuttering
We offer traditional stuttering therapy focusing on development of fluency enhancing techniques as well as the Speech Easy device.
swallowing therapy
In addition to offering Modified Barium Swallow Studies, we also provide swallowing therapy for individuals who are having difficulties swallowing which may occur following a stroke, illness, or other medical conditions. Therapy typically addresses strengthening the muscles of the mouth and throat and instructing the individual in strategies for safety when swallowing and may also include E-Stim therapy when appropriate.
cochlear implants
Auditory-Verbal and Auditory-Oral therapy approaches are available for both children and adults with cochlear implants. In addition, a monthly Adult Cochlear Implant support group meets to share experiences with their implants.
